“A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take”. Cardinal Mermillod
This month we’re featuring an expecting mother from Hughes Modelling Agency. Clementine has been modelling for 12 years and is embarking on a new journey, motherhood and maternity modelling.
This month we celebrate you Clementine and all the mothers out there. Happy Mother’s Day!
COCO: Tell us a little bit about your career. How did you get started?
Clementine: When I was 18 years old I was scouted by the director of Metropolitan Model Agency, Michel Levaton in Paris Claudia Shiffer in a Dusseldorf nightclub in the late 80s.) I started working internationally and did Fashion week in Paris, Milan and London.
COCO: Do you have any advice for aspiring models?
Clementine: My advice would be to stay strong minded, focused and don’t let people knock your confidence down. You must have tough skin to be a model!
COCO: What’s one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in this industry?
Clementine: Weight loss, when I started my career. The pressure to lose weight in a very competitive environment was pretty intense. I was even told that a bit of plastic surgery would help me to get to the top! It was never an option in my mind to go down that route.
COCO: What makeup items are a must have for you daily?
Clementine: Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour cream is a fantastic skin protectant.
Born and raised in Paris, she is of mixed heritage. Her mother is half French and half English and her father is originally from Guadeloupe.
“I am proud of my Caribbean origins as well as my European origins and always felt that I was the result of generations of cultures and ethnicity mixing together like a colorful fruit cocktail! My father is a big adventurer. He speaks many languages and lived in many countries. I was always inspired to travel and live abroad and I knew from a young age that modelling would allow me to do this.”
When the opportunity came for her travel to the Caribbean for a shoot, she jumped at the opportunity.
COCO: What was your favorite shoot?
Clementine: I did a fantastic calendar shoot around the Caribbean. We were island hopping with private jets, speed boats and sipping cocktails on the most hidden and exclusive beaches in the Caribbean. I flew from Paris to London, and London to the Grenadines. First stop was Barbados where we shot on isolated beaches. Then I took a private jet to St. Vincent. We did a beautiful shoot in the mountains. We then travelled to an isolated little island called Bequia. We ended up taking a speed boat to the tiny island. A speed boat ride in the night, drinking Champaign was quite scary but exciting at the same time! Bequia is absolutely picturesque with its amazing beaches of white sand and clear sea water. We also spent some time on an old colonial Caribbean sailing boat and we jumped in the middle of the sea for a swim. What a wonderful trip!
COCO: Tell us about your style?
Clementine: It depends of what mood I am in! I like feminine clothes but they can be sophisticated or casual! I love colorful flirty curve hugging dresses, French effortless chic ensembles (often black), and cool sporty casual outfits on my dress down days.
COCO: What are three items you must have in your closet?
Clementine: Sexy lingerie, a pair of nice leggings, a white vest top!
COCO: Who’s your fashion icon?
Clementine: Monica Bellucci fashion icon of all time and maybe up and coming Emily Ratajkowski from Pharrell Williams’ Blurred Lines music video.
COCO: Who is your favorite designer?
Clementine: Dolce & Gabbana. I love the Glamour and versatility of their Italian character collections.
COCO: If you weren’t modelling what would you be doing?
Clementine: I would be working with animals. I have a zoology/animal management degree, so I might be working in this industry one day. I am also a volunteer for a cat rescue (The Catcuddles Sanctuary) I am a big animal welfare supporter!
COCO: Do you have any beauty secrets you’d like to share with our readers?
Clementine: Always remove your make up before going to bed, apply a facial once a week, always take time to moisturize to avoid stretch marks and a bright white smile goes a long way in helping complete your look so take care of your oral hygiene!
COCO: You’ve embarked on a new journey of motherhood, what has it been like?
Clementine: Motherhood journey has its ups and downs – it is a new scary chapter of my life. It will be challenging but it will be very rewarding. And motherhood will make me complete and a better person.
COCO: Tell us a little bit about how your modelling career has changed since finding out you will be a mother?
Clementine: I had to take a lot of time off! Morning sickness is totally underrated! First of all it should be called “all day sickness” as it can come on at any time of the day and it can affect you all day long. It is truly debilitating at times. I lost quite a lot of weight due to nausea. Feeling hungry and not being able to eat is very frustrating. I had to put work on standby until I felt better! Then my little bump started being more apparent so I had to move to maternity modelling.
COCO: Would you encourage your little one to pursue modelling as well?
Clementine: If she wants to do modelling, then I will support her and try to guide her. But I would also encourage her to follow a more academic path along side of modelling. I would like her to be well-rounded and have many interests in life so she can pursue all her dreams!
COCO: Tell us about your pregnancy and the biggest change you had to get used to.
Clementine: Having to wake up to go to the toilet several times at night is really annoying. I can now only wear very comfortable clothes, I can’t stand tight non stretchy jeans!
COCO: Finish this sentence for us, “My mother means to me…”
Clementine: A woman like no other. She gave me life, nurtured and taught me, she shouted at me but most importantly she loved me unconditionally.
COCO: What kind of mother do you want to be to your little bundle of joy?
Clementine: I want to be the person my daughter can always lean on. The person she can trust and rely on. I want to be a loving mother first of all. My daughter will be my world and will always come first!
COCO: What’s one thing you want to pass onto your child?
Clementine: My strength. The world is not an easy place, she needs courage, strength and confidence to have good success and achievements in life.
COCO: Has your eating and exercising habits changed?
Clementine: I am now very fussy with food…I normally have a huge appetite, but now I don’t really fancy anything and I feel full all the time. I guess my taste buds are affected but hopefully this will improve when I am further along in my pregnancy. I loved the idea of exercising during pregnancy but the truth is since I got pregnant I have been feeling too unwell to exercise or too lazy. Now I feel pretty good but I still find it hard to motivate myself to do anything. I am still getting use to my new baby bump and it does affect my center of gravity. It takes a little time to adjust. Hopefully soon I will have more energy and will take on pregnancy yoga and Pilates!
