Winter came with much fury this season! Even in the Caribbean, I could say the weather has for sure been frightful, with cold fronts, hurricane like winds, chilly temperatures and icy rain battering our tropical climates. While this paled in comparison to what our friends in some states had to face with winter storm Jonas, this past season was particularly mean to all of us. But as all bad things, they come to an end and so will this bipolar weather. As we prep for the beauty that spring will bring with it, I want to share three homemade health and beauty concoctions that I’m using to get spring ready!
More and more beauty products are popping up on shelves around the world, but I’ve found that many of the ingredients and items we store in our cupboards are all we really need to beautify, detoxify and cleanse our bodies! Here are my three faves!
Mayo & Egg Treatment
Ok I’ll admit, the scent is not the best but this mixture works wonders on your hair. I recently bleached my hair and tried a number of store bought hair treatments that just didn’t seem to give me the moisture and shine I wanted. So, I threw it back to one of my grandmother’s favorite recipes and regretted not using it more. The proteins in this mixture are great for treating damaged hair, adding shine, strength and protection from breakage.
- Mix one whole egg with two tablespoons of mayonnaise, whisk into a creamy mixture and apply to hair.
I usually put on a plastic cap and sit under the dryer for about 15 minutes. Rinse and enjoy beautiful healthy hair!
During all of that bad weather a cold tried to creep in but was quickly sent packing after I dashed for my homemade medicine. A mix of honey, lime and cinnamon! The syrupy drink is the perfect mixture of vitamin C, antioxidants and natural sugars to knock out any pending bugs. But this lemony, syrupy goodness, is not only to fight a bug, it also acts as a great detox drink.
- I like to put about three tablespoons of honey in the microwave for about 10 seconds to liquefy it, then squeeze in a half of lime and add a dash of cinnamon. Delicious and healthy!
Brown Sugar Scrub
A good face scrub is always at your fingertips! Store bought exfoliators could be harsh on the skin. But someone recently put me on to this amazing concoction and I haven’t stopped using it since! The brown sugar is so gentle to the touch, but works well at removing dead skin, dry patches and other impurities. The olive oil, in a way, moisturizes and makes the skin baby soft and supple! Unlike beauty store scrubs, if this scrub “accidentally” gets in your mouth it’s OK…the taste is welcomed!
- Add a few drops of olive oil to a few dashes of brown sugar, mix and scrub away!
Ladies, it’s time to make several batches of these homemade, beauty and health products to make sure our hair, body and face are ready for the spring!
