When Life Gives You Tootsies…
In late November 1950, 8, 000 US Marines “The Chosin Few” seemed to have everything going against them. They were outnumbered by 120, 000 Koreans in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War, forced to survive in unbearable weather conditions (-30 degrees Fahrenheit) and their ammunition was running low.
To prevent the enemy from learning that their ammunition was running low, the Chosin Few, created a radio code name for mortar ammunition – Tootsie Rolls. In the midst of their distress, the troops radioed, “We need more Tootsie Rolls.”
The request was translated and granted.
When the parachute packs floated down to the crate where the troops were – to their surprise the packs were filled with thousands of actual Tootsie Rolls. Instead of despairing, the troops warmed the Tootsie Rolls with their bodies, making them pliable; then the candies were allowed to freeze into a new shape. This way, the Tootsie Rolls were used as a weld to patch bullet holes in vehicles and other equipment.
Talk about using what you have to work for you!
Let’s face it, most us do not have all we want at this present moment. And for some of us, the things which we do have are far from what we expected them to be. But like the troops who made the best of their Tootsie Rolls, we too can make the most of what we have.
Here is a start.
