Carnival season is in full swing, and if you’re a Carnivalian like myself you can’t miss a fete! However, sometimes life happens and you begrudgingly opt out of a carnival or two. Two being the maximum of course. So in case you missed it, here is a recap of the carnivals that I have had the pleasure of attending this past year.
DECATUR/ATLANTA ALL STAR WEEKEND
What can I say? There’s no place like home! Although carnival in the Atlanta area isn’t a new occurrence, it has since been rebirthed in Decatur which leaves room for growth. But don’t worry, it is still a great experience every year! Thousands come to Atlanta to dance and parade in the streets and show off their culture. The festival village is always ram-packed with fans anxiously awaiting top of the line artists such as Destra and Teddyson John.
Simply put, Atlanta is no Miami and definitely no comparison to Trinidad. If you have been to one carnival party in Atlanta, you have essentially been to them all. What’s worse is there are so many of the same parties that you never really know which one will be “the good one.”
J’ouvert in Atlanta is a concert. There is no paint, or mud, and very little powder. As much as I love a good show, it would be better for it to simply be referred to as the jouvert concert. Lest the patrons be misled.
The few parties that do stand out during All Star Weekend and are an absolute must are as follows:
- Sunday Morning: This was one of the few all-inclusive parties and likely the closest you will get to an international party experience. These two factors have led to a huge increase in ticket prices. But you will be guaranteed to have an awesome time.
- Colorgasm: This is a real jouvert party. It’s nothing but paint, powder and pure madness.
- All White Party: This party was absolutely crazy. The place was packed, and hot, and nobody cared because everyone was vibing! This was a great last lap for Carnival weekend.
All things considered, Atlanta is definitely a carnival experience to remember. I would definitely add this to the list of carnivals you don’t want to miss.
