Just a boy from “the back streets of JA,” Omi emerged onto the international scene in early 2014 with his summertime anthem “Cheerleader.” Although Cheerleader is his claim to fame, OMI is not a novice in the music industry. His musical journey is one of faith and endurance, two necessary assets to survive the cruel world that is the music business. His debut album Me4U is an awesome representation of not only that journey, but his unique blend of genres and talents as a breakout artist.
WHO IS OMI?
Born in the parish of Clarendon, Jamaica, Omar Samuel Palsey began his musical journey in his homeland after he was discovered by renowned producer Clifton “Specialist” Dillon. His music had an R&B vibe fused with the pulse of his reggae roots. He released several singles with Oufah Records including “Cheerleader” and “Color of My Lips” which featured a verse by infamous dancehall artist Busy Signal. Although his music circulated throughout the West Indies, he did not receive much notoriety. That is, until his single “Cheerleader” fell into the hands of a German DJ known as Felix Jaehn some six years later. Jaehn gave the song a new beat and essentially, new life. Thus the summer love soundtrack we now know was born.
In addition to Cheerleader, which is a fun and free EDM blended single, the album Me4U features a vast cohesion of genres from pop and R&B to House, Reggae and Ska. His second single “Hula Hoop” essentially mirrors the feel of “Cheerleader” with its light melodies and lyrics. However, the title track Me4U, which features vocals from Sarah West, is an R&B ballad recounting the connection and dedication of two lovers. Of course the album would not be complete without a lover’s rock tune which is definitely the feel of “Standing on All Threes.” Throughout the album OMI’s voice is not that of a typical 28 year old Caribbean crush. His harmonies resound through every track with passion and pain, happiness and sorrow.
All in all, the album Me4U is an amazing album for anyone to enjoy! The variety of music is sure to please EDM fans and reggae lovers alike. It was a very well-produced debut album. It also signifies that OMI is more than just a summer fling artist, he is capable of conquering any musical genre. I anticipate more great music and collaborations from OMI in the near future and patiently await a second album.
