Ah, Empire. It has united fans all over the globe with its plot twists and awesome cameos. However, with that show’s great success come some pretty nasty scandals and rumors. One rumor that particularly sparked my interest, and there were a few, was about the character known as “Becky” played by actress Gabourey Sidibe. Sidibe is more commonly known for her lead role in the movie “Precious.” She has also had recurring roles on American Horror Story. After making a steady appearance in the first four episodes of Empire, Sidibe was absent from the next few shows and of course the blogs began to buzz. The stories reported that she had been removed from the show because her “look” was not appealing to the fans. In other words, her size, and not to mention the blonde hair, was offending the audience. This made me furious! I absolutely LOVE Gabby! I could not understand how this rumor could have possibly had any truth for several reasons.
This Is NOT Her First Gig
For those who don’t know, Lee Daniels directs Empire. Daniels has also directed The Butler and ironically Precious. Essentially, Daniels gave Sidibe her big break in 2009. How ridiculous would it be for him to get rid of her because of her appearance when he introduced her to viewers in the first place? Although the character Precious called for a certain look, Sidibe was chosen not only because she fit the description but for her talent as well. This should be what is important, not her looks.
She Is Beautiful, PERIOD
Speaking of her appearance, I must say that I am a bit disappointed with the stylists because I do not think that they chose a wardrobe that accentuated her beauty. This has nothing to do with her size; there are plenty of plus size actresses and I truly believe that Sidibe is a very beautiful woman. However, I honestly don’t think her clothes and hair have been favorable for her on this show. For instance, if the character “Becky” should have light hair, I would suggest giving her honey blonde highlights, as opposed to a full head of bleach blonde. Sidibe has a very rich skin tone, so the lack of color in her character’s wardrobe is a major faux pas. Give her some color, please! This can be done without taking too much “fashion” attention from the major characters. I truly hope the stylists step it up for Season 2.
Her Talent Speaks For Itself
In addition to all of this, Sidibe is a truly talented actress and whether she is bold and beautiful or ‘skinty’ her talents should be more important than her wardrobe. Often times the media will focus solely on appearance and not on the actual talent of an actor/actress. In a world where looks are more important, it is often difficult to embrace those who do not necessarily fit into the mold of what society considers “beautiful.” I understand these typical guidelines; however, I believe that a person is truly beautiful when they are happy and comfortable with the way they were created. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. What others may see as a flaw or an imperfection is what makes each and every one of us unique.
As some of you may know, my fellow Empire Stans specifically, Sidibe tweeted to shut all of the rumors.
There you have it, COCO readers, it looks like Sidibe isn’t leaving the Empire cast anytime soon.
