There is nothing quite like a fine-looking living room. Whether it’s a high-rise Manhattan apartment, a ranch-style home in the mountains of California, or a modest Victorian house in Yorkshire, beautiful colors such as gold and cream, red and purple, black and white, or even red and white with gold accents lend a very “classy” feeling to any room.
In this age of ultra-modern styling and state-of-the-art floor coverings, an antique look that fits your current decor and furniture is what every homeowner desires. Just how do you accomplish this?
Black and white. Do you have anything in the room that stands out? If so, a black and white living room makes the most sense, for it will be the “light” room in the home.
The color scheme for black and white should always be simple, yet interesting. Choosing it is all about balance.
Bold use of color that contrasts the walls should be considered. For example, instead of choosing a creamy purple or an ultra-modern bright white, select rich deep, dark blue, deep, dark green, or any of the other earth tones, then mix it with lighter shades until you get the perfect black and white look. You can also use striking crystals to further break up the effect.
Black and white leather sofa and chair sets are a classic but can look very dated when it is contrasted with solid colored walls. Because of the fact that they are black and white, it is quite possible to get away with a more “standard” look with black leather but it will look more “archaic” if it is too over-done.
Add lots of light bulbs to the room to create a very vibrant space. Use down lights on the edges of the ceiling or light-up hanging lamps above the coffee table to make the room seem to be bigger than it really is. In addition, consider placing some LED light bulbs in between the large windows of your living room to create a very warm, inviting feeling.
If you have furniture that is black, make sure that it is either a darker shade or has a very dark finish, otherwise the room will appear overly somber. There are many interesting details that you can add to the look of a black and white living room. It all depends on the theme and design of the space.
Add some color to the living room by adding some plants and a fireplace surround. A hanging plant could be placed above the fireplace with an accent lighting post for focal points. Similarly, for a touch of elegance and charm, place some fake ivy or pottery vines around the fireplace.
Calla lilies or water lilies can be placed on the mantle, with a vase of flowers at each end of the table. White chocolate roses can be placed above the sideboard, and a fern or a vase of colorful flowers placed in the corner. You can also add a lamp with some plants and a candle holder, or a large photograph to a corner of the room.
What is your focal point? If it is an area of your living room that gets frequent traffic, you may want to put up something artistic, such as an abstract painting or a large artwork on canvas. If your space is small and cluttered, there are many options that can help give your living room a nice and bright feel.
However, you can also complement the other colors in the room by choosing some accessories that go well with it, such as a dramatic table runner or some lamps in interesting shapes and sizes. Make sure that whatever you choose to complement the colors will match the overall color scheme of the rest of the room.
